Back in town from a week competing in Western Regional Championships in Brundage, ID, the SkiBirds are ready to use this week to rest, recover, and catch up on school before taking off again to compete in Nationals in Bend, OR. The women’s team showed strong performances over the three days of competition in Idaho, with a 4th place team finish in GS, and a 5th place team finish in SL. Jordan Fitzgerald continued to lead the team, with 9th and 13th place finishes in giant slalom and slalom respectively. Lauren Hale (17th) and Katherine Greer (20th) helped to carry the team to a qualifying placing in GS, and in SL, Michele Warner (17th) and Lauren Hale (19th) carried the team to the finish.

The men’s team rallied even with low numbers – Cameron Hale was the only male representative from UBC. Despite an exciting 8th place finish overall in the slalom race, a DNF in the second run of giant slalom took him out of the running for individual qualification for Nationals. Hale proved to be an incredible competitor this season, with multiple first-place  finishes in the conference qualifiers, and is looking forward to challenging the competition again next season to earn a trip to Nationals in his 4th year competing for the ‘Birds.

The USCSA Nationals are happening in March 5-11 2017 in Bend, OR, and the SkiBirds need your help! Our team continues to perform at the highest level in our division, despite being funded almost entirely by student athlete fees, fundraisers, and donations from our generous alumni, supporters, and sponsors. We couldn’t do what we do without your support and encouragement, and every contribution makes a difference to our athletes. Backed by generations of legacy and strong foundations in our community, we hope to continue representing the University of British Columbia and Canadian collegiate ski racing for generations to come.
