Stanford Invite 2017 marked the first regular season tournament for the UBC women’s ultimate team. Pool play saw the Thunderbirds facing Dartmouth, South California and Colorado College, ending with a 2-1 record. Next, the T-Birds faced off against Colorado Kali in a pre-quarters game that ended on a universe point finish sending the team to the championship bracket Sunday morning. Naomi Johnson and Paige Muir were critical for UBC with their relentless defense and quick offensive transition.
Sunday’s gameplay started with another early morning start the T-Birds were back at it fighting through the mud and rainy conditions against #2 seed UCLA. Utilizing fantastic zone movement in the backfield by Serena Tam and Janelle Siwa as well as stifling defensive action from Carmen Leung UBC managed to push past UCLA for a spot in the top four. The Thunderbirds then faced an athletic Texas Melee in the tournament semi-finals, eventually falling 13-11 in a gritty, windy match. Finally, the Thunderbirds faced a tired Stanford squad in a game for 3rd place, capping off the weekend with their third universe point win and a brand new Spikeball set to show for it! Go Birds!
