What is Lace Up For Kids?

This post will give you everything you need to know to convince you to put on your best Jungle-themed attire and join us on November 16th for this year’s Lace Up For Kids!

Who are the “kids?”

Lace Up For Kids is an annual event that is entirely about raising money for the Rare Disease Foundation in collaboration with the BC Children’s Hospital. While any disease is awful, especially when it affects children, when a child is diagnosed with an uncommon disease, there may not be research on how to treat the child. In some cases these diseases are so rare that doctors are unable to form a diagnosis. The money raised at UBC Rec’s Lace Up For Kids event will go towards research and treatment for these children.

Events Leading Up to Lace Up For Kids

In addition to the main event on November 16th, many on-campus institutions are also hosting events to raise money as part of the Lace Up Palooza. Learn some sweet moves at a dance class, treat yourself at a bake sale, give yourself a study break at a club crawl, laugh away your stress at an improv show, or try your hand at a poker night! UBC Rec is also hosting Coin Wars, a team competition of who can collect the most coins.

What are you “lacing up?”

Skates! Lace Up For Kids is taking place on November  26th at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre from 6pm-11pm. There will be a limited number of rental skates available, so we do suggest that you bring your own, borrow a pair, or buy some second-hand skates. If you don’t like skating, do not fret, the event will also include food, a DJ, and a light show! We’ll also be having dance, improv, figure skating performances and more. And don’t forget to come ready to bid for items such as bouldering and yoga classes, brewery tours, restaurant gift cards, and a one night stay at the Opus hotel at the silent and live auctions!
