UBC Synchro Makes History at the CUSSL National Championships

As most students jumped into reading break, UBC Synchro jumped on a flight to Toronto to attend the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League’s National Championships. 17 athletes and 3 coaches made the trek out to Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario for the annual meet. The whole club had been working extremely hard since September, perfecting our routines and building up our endurance, and UBC Synchro was ready to show Canada what we were made of.

Day 1 of the competition commenced with the Advanced Duet category.  Out of 16 routines, UBC’s Olivia Zawadiuk and Katie Stirrat came out on top, taking gold in the category with a 2.5 point lead on the next competitor. This was the first time in UBC Synchro history that a duet has won first at Nationals! UBC’s other advanced duets, Angelica Rossi and Jasmine Marsan-Johnson, and Shannon Pflueger and Ashley Lloyd, placed 11th and 13th respectively. Following this event was Novice Duet in which Callie Brown and Valeria Moncada placed 8th! To finish off the day, Natalie Hays came 5th in Novice Solo.

Advanced Solo opened up the events for Day 2 of Nationals. Shannon Pflueger came 12th for UBC with an awesome swim. The Novice Team event was next and UBC’s novice team had one of their best swims of the season and took home the bronze medal! To finish off the day’s events UBC’s Advanced Team performed an amazing swim and placed 4th out of 15 teams. This was the highest an Advanced Team has ever placed in UBC Synchro history.

At the annual CUSSL awards banquet, as well as being awarded their ribbons and medals, some swimmers qualified for the ‘All Canadian Award’ for achieving an 80% average or above while swimming in the previous season. Congratulations to Olivia Zawadiuk, Jasmine Marsan-Johnson, Timothy Yaroshuk, Minnie Teng and our alumnus Jennifer Joy.

The meet was overall a huge success for UBC Synchro!  We would like to extend a big thank you to: Guelph University and Carleton University who co-hosted the meet, CUSSL for continuing to help grow and support university synchro, and to our amazing coaches – Jordan Wuest, Jessie Cait, and Christina Demiris who all worked so hard with our athletes this season to help everyone succeed!

As the season winds down, UBC Synchro has one more final event before we’re finished. On March 4th from 3:30-4:30 at the UBC Aquatic Centre, we will be hosting our End-of-Year Watershow, where all the routines that we’ve been working on throughout the year will be showcased one last time. Hope to see you there!
