Clinics

Overview: All teams are required to attend a 1 hour practice clinic and information session hosted by UBC REC at the Jericho Sailing Centre. This will consist of:

1. Classroom presentation.

2. Canoeing. Safety and paddling skills practice.

Who needs to attend? The classroom session is MANDATORY for the team captain and will cover detailed event information, race route description and rules, he/she is responsible for briefing their team on all safety details if any team members cannot attend. Following the presentation the team will be given the opportunity to learn the latest and best paddling techniques in a canoe off Jericho Beach. A minimum of seven team members are needed to paddle.

Location and Facilities: At the Jericho Sailing Centre – 1300 Discovery St., Vancouver, BC V6R 4L9, Google Maps here. Directions by vehicle: From 4th Ave, head northwest on NW Marine Drive. Turn North on Discovery Street and follow to the Jericho Sailing Centre. Paid parking is available. There are changing rooms, showers and a cafe on site.

Equipment and Clothing: UBC Recreation will supply all equipment, including PFD’s (Personal Flotation Device) and paddles. Participants are allowed to bring their own PFD if so desired, but UBC Recreation paddles must be used. Different sized PFD’s and paddles will be available. Make sure you bring clothes appropriate for the weather, also spare set/towel in case you get wet and no open toed footwear if you are leaving the boat at any point during the race (baton and gong participants).

Schedule and Timings: Clinics last for approx 50 mins total. Arrive a minimum of 30 mins before your clinic time. Clinics run every 30 minutes from 9:00am to 4:00pm, you will select your  time on registration, so please find a time that works for your team in advance.
