Rebecca Wong Him Yung

Bio

Nine years ago, what started off as moral support for a friend lead to regular yoga practice. Armed with a degree in architectural science, Rebecca knew the importance of structural integrity, but her impatience and competitive nature drove her to strive for a posture that simply looked good in a mirror. By using her natural flexibility as a crutch, not only did she compromise her practice, but she invited and provoked injury. When the injuries did occur, and there were many, she was unable to be content with a modified practice and self-prescribed more yoga. An eight year power struggle finally came to a head when she commenced her 200hr YA yoga teacher training journey at Karma Teachers.
Learning the scientific beauty behind the form and function of the asana and that practicing compassion to others can only be achieved if you are truly kind to yourself first, Karma Teachers stripped away years of armour revealing a goofy and creative vulnerability – taking yourself so seriously all the time was no fun at all.
Her classes are a tell tale sign of her love for the performing arts, part improv comedy, classical ballet, circus antics and slam-dunk competition.  She focuses her physical practice on establishing a foundation and letting her movements be dictated by breath. Reflecting on the fact that even in stillness your breath moves your body, why not allow your breath to flow through all of your movements; seduce your body, don’t force it.

Hanne Vieira

Bio

Hanne has been teaching yoga for over 10 years in Vancouver. Her philosophy is to create an environment that helps the individual replace temporary and superficial trends for more permanent and sustainable practices. Spirituality, awareness, self-acceptance, integrity are some of the values that she cherishes most.

She brings a special versatility, dedication and challenging exploration of yoga/pilates to every class. You can expect Hanne’s class to be professional, dynamic and presented in a heartfelt, fun and supportive environment. Her focus is on alignment and therapeutics delivered in a thoughtful and thorough manner. In addition, she likes to use alternative compliments such as music, creative movement, capoeira and mindful practices to further enhance the practice. She values an interactive student-centered environment and strives to create an inspiring and uplifting practice that will take you from where you are to where you want to be.

Emma O’Shea

Bio

Emma grew up in Dublin, Ireland and had a passion for dance from the age of 4. She practiced many different forms of dance mainly focusing on ballet, modern and Jazz. Emma then developed an interest in Pilates as similar to dance it requires and builds on core strength, balance and flexibility. Having an interest in how the body moves Emma went on to study Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin. Emma became STOTT Pilates certified on mat in January 2015.
Emma’s intent during the class is to teach body awareness and how to find proper alignment of the body in order to strengthen the core and feel length through the body.

Fiona Summers

Bio

Fiona Summers (BFA, RYT) is thrilled to be returning to teaching Hatha and Yin Yoga at UBC REC. Fiona is a Yoga Alliance registered teacher who completed her 250 hour certificate in Classical Hatha Yoga at Langara College. She has been practicing yoga for more than a decade and teaching for nearly five years. 

Fiona teaches a holistic Hatha class model with a focus on alignment and breath, with each class culminating in a short meditation (or mindful breathing) practice. In 2016, Fiona updated her training to include Yin Yoga. She is very excited to share her love of yoga and its many healing benefits, and hopes to further her training in a 500 hour teacher training course in the near future.

Guy Matthews

Bio

Guy Matthews will be instructing Hatha Yoga classes in the Kripalu tradition. His classes will range from a Yang style to more Yin (gentle). Your body will experience muscle strengthening, stretching and release of tension. The classes will promote cardio and circulatory health. Guy creates a light hearted and safe environment emphasizing listening to the wisdom of your body to create a unique authentic practice. Guy invites students to enter the inner world of consciousness to explore expansion in mind, body and soul.

Guy believes that our bodies as our physical vehicles on this journey require regular maintenance to ensure a vessel worthy of the souls’ journey. He also enjoys cycling, hiking, water activities and volunteering for conservation groups as part of his approach to well being.

Health is a journey we all experience, how we experience the journey is determined by the choices we make. Yoga is one way on the path and I invite you to explore it with me.

Qualifications

He began practicing Yoga in 1986 after several bouts of burnout from being out of balance with a busy business and volunteer life. Guy was certified to teach through the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in 1995 and 1999. In 1997 he operated West Coast Yoga and taught in businesses, health clubs, senior centers and in Yoga studios. He has been a guest and staff instructor at studio’s, retreats and conferences in Canada and USA.

Cheyenne Merlo

Bio

Cheyenne found yoga at the age of 21, while working full time and going to university.  For her, yoga can help manage the sometimes overwhelming feeling of life, and she is happy to bring the practice of mindful breath and movement to those at UBC. Knowing that yoga has been studied and is proven to help with sleep, the immune system, anxiety and depression, memory and concentration, she believes this will greatly benefit those on campus. Cheyenne aims to create a space where students, new to yoga or not, can come to feel nurtured, relaxed and have fun.  You can expect an accessible practice with a creative flow that will increase your flexibility, stability and energy both on and off the mat.
