What is the ARC?

With the construction of the new 8,000 sq.ft. Fitness Centre, we have sectioned up the space into 5 zones – cardio area, free weights, weight machines, functional training area, and full body training circuit. We also have a personal training studio, 2 fitness studio spaces, classroom, men’s women’s, and universal changeroom, and lockers.

Where is the ARC and how do I get there?

The ARC is located in the UBC Life Building (formerly the old Student Union Building) on the basement and main level of the building. Throughout the spring and early summer of 2018, there will be ongoing construction in the area, so access to the ARC will require users to walk through the Life Building and use either the elevator or east stairs to reach the fitness centre and change room areas in the basement level.

What are the fees to use the ARC?

Current fitness membership and drop-in prices will also apply to the ARC.

Current fitness memberships at the BirdCoop will also include access to the ARC until their expiration. Community, staff, and faculty memberships (1 month, 3 month, 9 month, and 1 year) will be valid for access to the ARC (and the BirdCoop) for the duration of their term. All student memberships will expire on April 30th.

Updated fitness membership rates will be available beginning May 1st.

What access will UBC students have to the new facility?

All UBC students registered in classes (and paying related student fees) can access the ARC through discounted, student rate memberships.

What access will UBC staff & faculty have?

Staff and faculty can access the ARC through discounted, staff and faculty membership rates.

How do I start using and accessing the ARC?

If you’re getting started with fitness or do not have a current BirdCoop membership, you can purchase new memberships in advance at the Student Recreation Centre or in-person once the ARC opens. To be eligible for discounted rates, please bring UBC Student, UBC Staff & Faculty, or UNA/CSC card for verification.

Current BirdCoop members will automatically have their memberships extended to include access to the ARC through the expiration of their current term. No additional action is required to use the ARC once the facility opens.

If I currently have a membership at the BirdCoop Fitness Centre, will I be able to switch my membership or access the new facility?

Current fitness memberships at the BirdCoop will also include access to the ARC until their expiration. Community, staff, and faculty memberships (1 month, 3 month, 9 month, and 1 year) will be valid for access to the ARC (and the BirdCoop) for the duration of their term. All student memberships will expire on April 30th.

Updated fitness membership rates will be available beginning May 1st.

Will anything happen with the BirdCoop, now that there’s a new fitness space opening?

Our intention with the ARC is to create a comfortable, welcoming, and inclusive environment for those who are new to fitness and training activities. New equipment, such as squat racks and free weights, will also be added to the BirdCoop Fitness Centre for use by experienced lifters. Both fitness facilities are designed around our members’ needs to set you up for success in reaching your health and wellness goals.

Is the ARC wheelchair accessible and accessibility friendly?

Yes – the ARC’s change rooms, fitness centre, equipment, and access are designed to include persons using wheelchairs or with accessibility requirements. The ARC includes a basement level fitness centre that can be accessed by elevator.
